3.0. Ante Ivanov (★ 1736 – ✝ D.U.)

Ante Ivanov married Matija, née Brnas (D.U.). They had six children: sons Ante (1769–1849), Filip (D.U.) and Pavle (1777–), and daughters Jaka (1771–1837), Luca (D.U.) and Ruža (D.U.).

Ante Ivanov was the third son of our first common ancestor, Ivan, born c. 1695, and was several years younger than his brother Petar. He had three sons: Ante, Filip and Pavle, and daughters Jaka, Luca and Ruža.

Ante Antin and Filip Antin continued the family line, while Pavle’s fate is unknown. Only his birth record survives, with no further information, suggesting that he probably died very young or left Ričice before leaving any further trace in the parish registers.

According to the available records, Ante moved with his family to Zavelim around 1819, where his branch of the family developed. His younger brother Filip remained in Ričice, where his line took shape most clearly.

Thus the line of Ante Ivanov remained firmly connected with Ričice and Zavelim, where it developed most clearly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This core produced the largest number of bearers of the Tandara surname, so Ante’s line is considered the most extensive among Ivan’s descendants.

In later generations, some members of this branch moved to other parts of Croatia, then to countries of the European Union, Canada, the United States and Australia, extending the family line far beyond its original homeland.

FIRST SUB-BRANCH OF ANTE ANTIN

3.1. Ante Antin (★ 1769 – ✝ 1849)

Ante married Matija, née Jukić, in 1801. He was the eldest son of Ante Ivanov. They had sons Lovro, Mijo and Petar (1821–), and daughters Pera (1802–), Ruža (1804–), Antica (1807–), Iva (1808–), a second Antica (1814–) and Marija (1823–). Only the sons Lovro and Mijo continued the family line. Mijo’s descendants acquired the family nickname TUCIĆI, while Lovro’s descendants through his son Marijan became known as LOVRINOVIĆI, and through his son Križan as KRIŽANOVIĆI. According to the 1819 census, Ante lived in Zavelim, while his brother Filip lived in Ričice. Their descendants later spread throughout Croatia, Europe, the United States and Canada.

3.1.1. Lovro Antin (★ 1811 – ✝ 1903)

He married Matija Sičenica. They had two sons, Marijan and Križan.

Marijan married Matija, née Kovač. They had sons Jure (1867–), Marko, Stipan (1873–) and Jozo, and daughters Iva (–1869), Mara (1871–1872) and Matija (1880–1880). Marijan’s descendants, through his sons Marko and Jure, bear the family nickname LOVRINOVIĆI, derived from Marijan’s father Lovro.

3.1.1.2. Križan Lovrin (★ 1843 – ✝ 1910)

He married Pera Budimir, with whom he had fifteen children: ten sons—Mate, Ilija (1867–1875), Ante, Jakov (1871–1872), Marijan (1873–), Paško (–1886), Jozo (1877–), Ivan, Jure and Grgo (1887–)—and five daughters: Anica (–1869), Jakovica (1868–), a second daughter named Anica (1875–1877), Joza (–1895), and a third daughter named Anica (1879–). Seven of Križan's children died before the age of ten. One notable detail is that his second son, Ilija, died after being gored by a bull in 1875.

Ante, the third son of Križan Lovrin, married Iva Trogrlić. They had a son, Stipan (1898–), and two daughters, Jela and Mara. After the First World War, in 1918, Stipan moved to Serbia. It is not known whether he had descendants or what later became of him.

3.1.1.2.4. Jure Križanov – family nickname ĐULKO (★ 1883 – ✝ 1947)

He was the ninth son of Križan Lovrin and married three times—the highest number of marriages recorded among the Tandaras. His first wife was Pera Matišić, who came from the family of the renowned Croatian musical family Matišić. They had a son, Josip. Pera died in 1919 during the Spanish flu epidemic, which local people called ‘grla’. His second marriage was to a woman from the Budić family. They had a son, Martin, who was killed near Bihać in 1942. His third marriage was to Joza Dragun, and they had no children.

Josip Jurin was tragically killed in 1946 in circumstances that have never been officially clarified. According to the testimony of eyewitness Marijan Budimir (Mijan), who gave his account to Josip’s wife Anica, née Dragun, before his death, the killing was committed by Josip’s immediate neighbour, acting at the urging and on the instructions of an older brother. According to that testimony, the motive was material gain, because Josip was working as a merchant in a cooperative at the time and had access to goods and supplies that were of great value in the post-war period.

In the years after the war, a version spread publicly that Josip had been killed by retreating kamišari; the family account describes that version as false. It was never confirmed in court, and the entire case—because of post-war circumstances, unsettled social relations and deliberate manipulation of information—remained uninvestigated and unprosecuted. The event is presented here solely as family testimony and the historical experience of his descendants, not as a judicially established fact.

Josip’s death and the long-standing uncertainty surrounding its actual circumstances deeply marked the lives of his wife, children and later generations. Particularly difficult was the fact that the man said in the family testimony to have organised the killing later helped Josip’s family in various ways during his lifetime. This created a profound inner conflict for Josip’s son Ivan—my father—and made it impossible for him, until his death in 2025, to believe the eyewitness testimony.

Author’s note

Because of contradictory and manipulative public portrayals, our family was for decades exposed to unpleasant labels that did not correspond to what we learned from the testimony of an eyewitness to the event and from our own family account. The claim that Josip had been a victim of the kamišari was used by representatives of the authorities at the time as the basis for erecting a monument to him and including his death in official commemorations of anniversaries of the former state. This created among people the inaccurate impression that our family had been ideologically aligned, which did not correspond to reality: at that time, ordinary people did not have a developed awareness of ideology; rather, heads of households were struggling with all their strength to feed large families in exceptionally difficult times.

I include this note to clearly distinguish official and later-formed folk traditions from the eyewitness account and family memory. Its purpose is not to accuse the present-day descendants of the perpetrator or to create hostility; relations between our families today are entirely normal and friendly, based on mutual respect and understanding.

That is precisely why this record has value: it represents a historical fact of family memory, an event that for decades was concealed, misinterpreted and incorporated into folk traditions that did not reflect the actual circumstances. This is a memory carried by Josip’s descendants—not as a burden, but as a quiet reminder of the truth preserved by our elders.

Recording this truth does not seek condemnation or revive old divisions. On the contrary, with this record we pay tribute to the generation that endured it all and leave room for new generations to live freely, without the burden of the past, but with a clear and honest understanding of what truly happened. Truth spoken calmly, without bitterness and without intent to hurt anyone, is the only way to respect what was and ensure a normal, healthy continuation of life for all who come after us.

Ivan Josipov married twice.
